Re: Nairobi Clean-up; 18th Sept 2010

Oketch

Thanks Mr Oketch, this approach can save the government alot of money. Since its few hours nobody feels bad about it. It is done countrywide the same day, the same hours but the needs of different villages, locations or districts may be different. E.g the people in North eastern may be planting trees while people in Nairobi and other towns may be doing clean ups. What the authority need to do is keep the requirements ready. eg If you decide you will plant trees this october on top of the hills to prevent soil erosion, you should have started planting trees in nurseries so that they will be available for planting. Please dont ask people to come with seedlings for planting but they can carry the tools like jembes and pangas

I would encourage the kenyans in diaspora to share with you and other leaders what they find beneficial to kenyans in the countries in which they are. This would be the best kenyans in diaspora can help other kenyans with as long as its feasible. I am sure wherever we are even in Iraq, there is something positive we can share. Meanwhile, my eyes are wide open for anything beneficial to kenyans.

Rose,

This is the kind of feedback we need.

I have shared this with the Director and we are looking at such options.

Oketch

I am feeling like coming back to kenya. This is very very good way of handling the cleanliness not only in Nairobi but other towns in Kenya. In Rwanda there is something similar called omuganda day which is usually on every last saturday of the month from 7am to 10 am followed by PUBLIC educative lecture on something important eg family planing etc  between 10 am and 11 am. These activities are arranged in small groups like villages and managed by their leaders. the leaders make sure everybody is present unless one is is sick. The people may plant trees, clean up, help in road construction and so on. During these hours all other activities are stopped including matatu operations until 11am. Both rich and the poor, community leaders and even mps attend this important public functions, carry toes for the function and all work and leave at the same time. This the day both poor and the rich share something in common. This what has kept Rwanda the way it is.

Keep up Kenyans

Dear Friends of Nairobi,

In a meeting chaired by the Town Clerk- City Council of Nairobi Mr. Phillip Kisia, it was agreed that the clean-up scheduled for 18th September 2010 will cover the whole of Nairobi but the focal point will be Eastleigh 1st Avenue.

The event is being coordinated by the Director of Environment Eng Christine Ogut and her Team and the CCNSET in conjunction with all Friends of the City. The general clean-up will be every 3rd Saturday of every month. We are determined to bring Nairobi back to her lost glory and all residents must play their part.

All the Departmental Directors will join the Town Clerk and His Worship the Mayor in Eastleigh. We are really appreciative of the cooperation we have received from the Eastleigh Business District Association led by their officials, and the support we are receiving from the DC Kamukunji Madam Matilda Sakwa.

All Deputy Head of Departments will coordinate the Divisional clean-ups in the rest of the 7 Divisions in Nairobi whose schedules will be as follows;
  • Kasarani Disivision- Baba Dogo  at Chandaria Primary School
  • Westlands Division- Kangemi along Malenga Road
  • Langata Division- Southlands at Kijiji along Kitengela Road
  • Starehe Division- Mathare at Kiboro Primary School
  • Embakasi Division- Dandora Area 3
  • Dagoreti Division- along Gathuru Road
  • Makadara Division- at Lunga Lunga.
All the Divisional Managers will be on site to help with the necessary logistics.

We are hence appealing to all the residents of Nairobi to come out in their large numbers and help clean Nairobi. We are requesting that you come with some working tool that you will use. The City Council of Nairobi will avail all the garbage collection tracks, even the ones from all the contractors for this noble event.

Let us role our sleeves and join the Council Officers on this day.
