Subject: What tribe am I?
Hi Members
Kenya is a tribal country! Tribalism has found its way of creating a wedge and dividing communities in Kenya. It has found itself dividing kenyans geographically. It is deeply entrenched in our politics, we have tribal political parties(accept it or refute it), our political leaders bank their support on ethnic grounds.
It is so bad that matters of nationalism are decided upon on whether our political leader is for or against it( a good example is the proposed constitution). Tribalism has found its way in the ministries; if the minister of X Ministry is of Y ethnic background it goes without saying that the majority of the staff in that ministry will be biased ethnically.
I work for this organization that majority of the staff come from one ethnic group, unless the position is highly specialized that the only available qualified person was of a different ethnic group or; that the organization requires a person of a different ethnic group to drive its agenda it that particular ethnic area.
Though the society do not recognize me as a Kalenjin, i was born in the Nandi. Had a chance to learn the subject "mothertongue" in Nandi( for those of us who were around during the time the education sector had the mothertongue subject). identified and interacted with the Nandi community & culture for most of my childhood. During the 1992 tribal clashes, my family was forced out of nandi to Kericho district, at that time being at the age of joining a boarding Provincial Secondary school, circumstances had me interact with members of nearly all the ethnic groups in the country. The same after going through an institution of higher learning in the country.
In 2007/08 Post Election Crisis our family and i was dislocated from Kericho District because we are not Kalenjins. Yes at that time i had gotten a job in Nairobi which is a cosmopolitan city.
This leaves me with a question. Kenya being a tribal country. What tribe am i?
