Re: Methodist University an Epitome and Fountain of Tribalism

Kudos Malcolm, you have enlighten a good number of us. It is unfortunate that some people are trying to defend the indefensible. It does not mean that coz an institution is private you only employ your next of kin or tribemates. This is even more sad when we are talking about a higher institution of learnring, are they teaching in their mother tounge? i remember when i was in primary and i had to be taught English and Maths in Kalenjin coz all the teachers were kales. Can you imagine being taught English in your vernecular? that is why i have problems writing in English todate. I am very sure 90% of students in Methodist University come from the sorrounding areas and i would not be surprised if a lecturer chips in a point in Kimeru. This is called inbreading and may affect graduates from such colleges interacting with people from other regions in their later lives.

Malcom,
I believe you could be having personal issues with KEMU, or other interests which we may need to know. I would wish to mention that and I think you know that  KEMU is a private owned institution and thus the owner as all the rights to appoint the persons who will represent his / her interests, vision, mission and values as outlined when the idea of starting the institution was conceived. Thus the methodist church has all the rights to appoint the right mix of people it deems right.
Board of Trustees members whom you say are all merus , represent the church and therefore you would not expect the methodist to appoint non-methodists to man it's institution just like the Board of Directors in a private firm is composed of the owners / shareholders of the firm.. The sheer coincidence that they are all merus ofcourse may be related to stronghold of the church...

I think as Maryann as put it right that you would better do your research on all the private entities and tell us, who manages what.. If this were a public institute, I would be concerned as you...
Thanks
Ayub

I can see that you came up a list of the admin staff, maybe you should have come with various lists from many insititutions then we can compare and further see whether what is happening at KEMU is unique to what happens to the other places

2. so what is your problem, if they choose to have people for the same tribe? is it the tribe that you have a problem with or KEMU the insititution?

Kibaya,
I agree. In the case of KEMU, I also agree with you that such religious affiliated institution are forced to put in the management especially the University council and board of trustee church members. We all know that Methodist is almost exclusively Meru and have only heard of other branches in TZ and so we are bound to see more Meru folks. However they have a moral (not legal) obligation to put folks from other areas and I think they have done that. They need to attract students and faculty from other areas and so the "need for affirmitive" action.

I think KEMU is facing more conflicts arising out of differences between church leaders and groups. My former Prof. who is also ex President of Methodist Church, Bishop Prof. Nthamburi has taken the council to court over interference with the running of the institution and this seem to be a major headache for KEMU than the balancing act:

Kuria and Nyongesa, I completely agree with you on the value of integrating students of all cultures and backgrounds, and for them to receive instruction from an equally diverse faculty. However, there is no indication this is not happening at KEMU; In fact one time I happened to be passing by their Meru Campus and stopped for a chat with students streaming out of the gates. It was siasa time so I attracted a sizeable crowd; surprisingly, majority of them were Nairobi folks, mostly of Kikuyu extraction. A few Luhyas, Kisiis and other tribes.

The downtown Nbi Campus is also hub of activity and even without interacting with them, it's unlikely that Baite's will be of any significant proportion. Can't speak on the faculty composition, but again it's unlikely that this kind of buzz can be generated by a parochial collection of staffers.
A drink is in order Kuria...one of these days; provided queen wams is gonna be there!

Good day,

Nyongesa,
I am with you on us mixing with people from different societies. I mourn the exist of A-levels and the days when you could apply and study in any part of the country. There was no A-level school which had students from one locality. That quota system was a disaster. They should have changed the system of education without introducing those quota systems. I still think my two years at Mbita Point opened my eyes and made me appreciate other groups. In that class, we had students from all over the country. I cant even remember whether Luos were the majority in A-Levels. I remember the many questions asked about Central and the jokes and the time spent learning Dholuo which has evaporated now but my best memories remains on cold reception I received from my "tribesmen" when my suitcase was stolen at OTC place at night as I prepared to sit for my exams in Third term. With hope lost of ever passing and with mock exams giving me only 6 points and now with books and clothes gone, I gave up. My friends from Central had unkind words for me for "being careless and also blamed my old man who was with me". Fellows from the areas heard them and I got the notes from unexpected areas. One student went to Kaksingiri to get notes left by his brother for History and Geography. They came from Kagumo High school and I relied on them. I came top of that class in both subjects and in the school, being the only two people to join University. Up to now I think I may not have joined any ones University if I studied in Central. I had flopped in Form Four and had a weak second division with only 4 subjects passed to enable me join form 5. The environment made me pass but the support I got from folks especially the Luo friends in particular the fellow who sacrificed his weekend to get me notes in Kaksingiri. I think that also prepared me for getting friends and being at home with people from all corners of the country. At the university many were only comfortable with own tribesmen and you could tell who had come from a school where people mixed with fellows from different parts of the country.

Yes, we should not encourage in-breeding and we should be made to "mix" and be taught by national teachers and lives with Kenyans not own tribesmen.

Tim, l respect you but before you group people as tribalists and
credit KEMU Administration as having got jobs as individual, ask
yourself if the campus is after national reflection or not. Whether
you like or not very competent kenyans or outside will fear when they
browse to check the administration. On line of culture and language
accent a person from such tribally constituted institutions will never
accept nor appreciate others with positive mind of change. Imagine l
being a luhya, taught by luhya teacher from pre-unit to campus within
my community(including communication and food). Is there any day l
will differentiate between P for papa and B for brother or baba? Is
there any day l will appreciate other kind of food other than ugali?
Same to culture.

When vacancies were advertised in the same institution most people
from where l was were discouraged and some of were encouraging only
Mt. Kenya to send application. Imagine it was before the full list of
top management was out. I didn't know the reason behind this. May the
Methodist Church take action to reflect national pride. J.N.N.
