Yes I remember it well. We were under a dictator at that time and I have much at the back of my head....and, I have experienced being called to the 24th floor too.
The situation is different today.
There is a difference between a foreign embassy helping to shield the life of someone under threat of death and a whole foreign ambassador trotting all over Kenya campaigning for what his boss thinks is the way OUR election / referendum should go.It is just not ethical !
Always remember that America has its own agenda for Kenya...and Africa for that matter.
Sungu...did we ASK for money from USA for our YES Campaign...and did we invite Obama's envoy to run around all over antagonizing the Red side...and so bluster our Green reputation? He has done more damage than good.
What if all the foreign embassies sent their Ambassadors on campaign safaris to do it for us. Why don't they?
Do we need America to be our nurse maid? Or what is the reason for all this patronage?
Have we sold ourselves to America?
Please consult your conscience. Is it wrong or right for a foreign ambassador to do what Obama's envoy is doing in Kenya..(.a sovereign state )....today?
Our own politicians have polarized the country again by taking sides and turning the referendum into a competition. Put a foreign ambassador in the pot as well and things turn really sour! Good Lord...we will soon be saying this is America's constitution !!

Roz, IN the 90s when Smith Hemstone stood by reformists, was it meddling? That time Moi used to set security apparatus on anyone speaking mlti partyism, when the American Embassy saved the likes of Gibson Kamau Kuria, Paul Muite etc(some would be dead today had it no been for that brave Ambassador) from Moi's agents(some were secretly taken out of the country when they were earmarked for assassinations, others were not so lucky and are not with us today). Was all that meddling? remember it made us break the Moi yoke of oppression and dictatorship, when you could not gather together 2-3 people without being arrested by the notorious Special Branch and CID and Mwakenya pamphlets planted on you, being dragged to Nyayo or Nyati House for "interrogation"(ask Kombo what the process was, he has a dossier to share!!) I just do not like meddlesome foreign envoys telling Kenya what it must do !!
It;s somehow obnoxious to me.The Referendum is Kenya's affair, Right?
