Atwoli should spare workers his theatrics

Francis Atwoli- the Secretary General of Cotu is an enigmatic man.

One day I was so down and as I walked into my house at 9.00pm, I found him banging tables in my sitting room. He was on news and in his usual comic ways, he was stressing some point by throwing his hands all ways, banging his table, opening wide his eyes, shaking and swaying in all directions and above all, he was shouting.

He made my day. He brought out the contrast in effects. Do you get heard by shouting? And I laughed, because, one of my heroes- HE Dr Kofi Annan will never shout. He talks in measured tones and the whole world listens.

Atwoli in reverse, makes all noise, threatens and does the complete opposite, and he has no effect.

Take the current case of the NHIF contributions. He is swearing that workers will go on strike if the new rates are effected. And he says that the provision of healthcare is the responsibility of the government! This is where we part ways.

Who is the government? And for how long will the workers suffer on such gross misinformation from people like Atwoli? People who ought to know, but have chosen to play workers on this crucial matter.

We are the government and it is our responsibility to ensure that we have a healthcare scheme that serves our best of interests. The rates are in such a progressive manner that the rich amongst us will pay slightly more to cover for the less endowed. This is a matter of common sense and Atwoli knows this.

But he has chosen to play some populist game with such a crucial matter as out health. It goes without say that access to affordable healthcare has been ellusive in Kenya. We have had progressive proposals which have not seen the light of day. Do you remember Madam Charity Ngilu attempted to bring such a Bill some times back?

It was mired in politics and it never saw the light of day. We cannot afford to be perpetually  led the wrong path by leaders who do so intentionally.

Now, it is our responsibility as workers in Kenya to stand up and be counted on this crucial matter that affects our lives. Francis Atwoli is well covered and if he has flu, he flies First Class to Geneva for medical attention. What about the worker that he pretends to be talking for?

Kenyans must wake up and put such charlatans to the strict. If we cannot finance our own medical scheme, who on earth will come to finance it for us? And Atwoli knows this fact.

We the people of Kenya must be progressive and support initiatives such as the NHIF proposals to enable us address our medical needs. This has taken us 47 years to come up with and we must say NO to Atwoli and all such people who have medical schemes that allow for their medication in Geneva.

We must domesticate our own scheme to take care of our medical needs here in Kenya. And on this score, Atwoli ceases to be my friend. We will reconnect on other matters, but on this one, we must mobilize all the Kenyan workers to stop Atwoli on his tracks.

This is staying with the issues Kenyan.
