Re: Change of surname after Marriage in Kenya?

This is an archaic practice which began in the 12th century and aimed at subduing women essentially making them properties of the husbands. It was part of the practice which subjugated women forbidding them to own property, engage in business, take up leadership positions and other  roles in the society. Unfortunately it was adopted in Christianity and Biblical verses are also used to justify the chauvinist practice. Those who are citing that after a marriage men and women become one dont point to the other alternative for men also to take up a woman's surname. It virtually takes a way a woman's identity and many woman are refered to by the husband's name instead of their family names.
This practice has led to many women to lose their identity even after divorce as it becomes a laborious task to get one's identity back. The likes of Madelaine Albright, the former US Secretary of State are among those who have painfully lived with this tag even after separating from their husbands.
Some 'liberated' women nowdays are adopting a practice where they maintain their surnames and also add an hyphenated husbands' name. This still does not solve the problem as the concept of subjugation is still existing.
On the other hand,  Islam specifically abhors this practice. 14 centuries ago,the woman even after marriage had the right to maintain her identity, own property and even carry out business engagements without the interference of the husband. And on top of this, however much she owned, the onus still rested on the husband to to look after her welfare.

Dear Mlalahoi Members,

Can anyone in this forum explain how a woman should legally change her last name after marriage to assume husbands surname?  This is a case of "after the weddings"

Your advise will be appreciated.

Rgds, Lawrenzia.

By the virtual of the marriage, a woman becomes a man's property so it is.
