Re: IIEC and voter turn out wonder-did they think it through??

come come OS
this is not an IIEC issue
even when there was a public holiday
less than 77% turned up
it is the voters democratic right NOT to vote just as much as it is TO VOTE

God Bless

MAY NOBLE THOUGHTS COME TO YOU FROM EVERWHERE

Subject: IIEC and voter turn out wonder-did they think it through??

The Interim Independent Electoral Commission led by Chairman Isaak must be very big jockers. I looked at him wondering why only 40 something % of people turned up to vote in the Juja, Makadara and Starehe by elections and wondered whether they had any idea it was a working day and most working people were out there working.

A few who turned up at voting stations after 6pm after work were turned away. For the IIEC to turn around and ask why the voter turn out was not as it was during referendum etc is a big joke. Voting is a secondary exercise when it comes to daily bread issues!!! Some people actually earn daily wages and not salaries so they cannot afford to stand on voting qeue all day waiting to vote while that could translate into sales of wares or manhours worked.

They need to know that first and foremost, many employers may not release staff for things like voting unless it is a declared public holiday, even so, some adamant ones still insist on staff going to work!!!

For this reason, the results of these by elections may not neccesarily reflect the wishes of all the electorate and dynamics could easily change if say the working class voted in big numbers.

In order to allow all people to vote, voting days must be public holidays, if you cannot declare it a public holiday because it involves only a section of society, ensure it happens on a weekend when most have time to participate, alternatively, for those who take time off work to vote, as long as they can prove they voted by that voting ink or voter card showing constituency etc, should be allowed a few hours to go vote.

IIEC needs to ensure they make voting accesible to all despite the challenges such as work. Voting is a duty, but it must be a duty that does not intefere hinder other things like the search for daily break.
