Re: [KOL] Clean up Nairobi-Kombo answers CCNSET

Kenyans must learn to Keep the environment clean. Kenyans must refuse to buy items from the supermarkets and then packed in 'juala'. Honestly, we can stop this. Our paper industry is dying yet we keep on polluting the environnment anytime we buy chips on the street. Where did those brown 'paper bags' go to?

Kombo,

I made a very concise statement.

It is us who throw garbage anyhow in Nairobi. It is us who throw paper and our household waste in our neighbourhood. It is us who throw spent milk and soda cans out through our car windows as we come from church with our families. It is us who buy bananas and as we peel it off, we through the waste by the road side.

That is a very true statement. Or else, how do garbage find itself in our neighbourhood and in our streets?

When you talk of defrauding the city residents and dwellers, I surely fail to connect. I am the Chair to the CCNSET, a body that includes very many entities, KCDN, KAM, Westlands Association, Hawkers Association, Hindu Council, Safer Nairobi Initiative, TI, and a host of many other organization. Can you report to me or to the police or to the CCN any case where CCNSET has defrauded any City dweller and resident of anything. I would like to take it up immediately. I take offense at such reckless and sweeping statements, especially coming from someone well known to me like you.

Through our involvement with the City officers, we have been able to help bring some focus on to service delivery. One such area is the kind of partnership that we are creating with various institutions to enable us demand for more from the Council.

You have talked about us giving the CCN a clean bill of health and then the issue of the mortuary saga came up. I would invite you to the concept of performance contracting and the rapid results management. Evaluation of this is based on what you have signed on your performance contract and what targets you have set your sights on in the Rapid Results Initiative, and our evaluation kept faith with the best laid practices everywhere the world over. We have the technical, practical, academic and professional back up that can march any other educated person all across the world.

But when it comes to such scandals as the one for the cemetary saga, we at CCNSET were at the fore front in demanding accountability. More over, the cemetary scandal is a subject that you might need to delve deep into to enable you understand it some more. You will be shocked at where and how it was planned, and the Council might just have been a victim.

Again, the Cemetary Scandal was planned and executed long before we were constituted at the Council.

Lastly, what we have started in partnership with the Council is a voluntary affair. We will be cleaning Nairobi every 3rd Saturday of the month and only those who have interest can join us.

It is not an easy affair and we know that we have sceptics like you who will try bogging us down. But I am happy that I have received more than 65 private emails from Kenyans and non Kenyans congratulating us for this positive and proactive approach to solving the problem of garbage in Nairobi.

We are determined to clean Nairobi despite the taxes we pay to the City Council and to the Central Government. Then we will hold the Council responsible if they cannot arrest you for littering the City. We will be very firm on this.

It must be our collective responsibility to help keep Nairobi clean. A journey of one thousand miles starts with the first step, not with procrastination and sideshows. While some people will be wondering how things are happening, I am happy that CCNSET with the tacit support of many residents in Nairobi have taken the first step to engage the City Council in demanding for Service Delivery through active partnmership.

Peace and blessings,

Great Edward - you have out it well. My main headache is the same. Despite the fact that i like such ventures like city wide cleaning, the City Council must do their work. Now i would like to inform you that Oto is not an employee of city hall but rather the Chairman of CCNSET....this unconstitutional outfit that has partnered with city hall to again continuosuly set pace for defrauding the city dwellers and residents. Kindly note the key word STAKEHOLDERS! Last year, the stakehoder sgave city hall a clean bill of health on corruption and non delivery of services. They said that City Hall has met their targets and have done their job according to the performance contracts. A week later - things erupted: massive corruption were reported including the grave saga which Majiwa has gone mute on until today and we do not know the truth from the ministry of local government.

Now Edwards and others who HAVE QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS EXERCISE, should be proud that they are asking very genuine questions. CCNSET has abused the tax payer and i wonder whether its composition genuinely pay tax to the government. Oto - i would challenge you to publish tha names of the CCNSET, and there affiliate business entities they endevour to protect by partnering with CCN to make the city dirty. I think that CCNSET being an illegal entity does not report to anyone except the City Hall that appointed them. The public did not have a hand in their formation and therefor they can release arrogant statements in abuse of the tax payer's responsibility.

City residents and dwellers can hold CCNSET with the contempt it deserves if its holding us with the contempt of not answering questions we have. We need the CCN to atleast demonstrate ability to serve the people. Some services are public services/goods. Things like water, garbage collection, traffic etc. We in trun pay rates and rent for such services to be done freely.

Oto - kindly stay with issues and answer Edward. Has CITY COUNCIL OF NAIROBI performed in serving the people? Who are CCNSET answerable to? Who appointed them? What are their mandate/role? Can you publish the names of the CCNSET? Can you be able to give us a profile of the companies or business its members hold? Why arwe they protecting the CCN when we all know that CCN is a mismanaged entity.

Kombo Elijah

Mulindwa,

How does it pain you that we came together to help clean Nairobi?

We have made some concise decision and every 3rd Saturday of the month, we will be coming out to clean Nairobi.

This is a voluntary affair for those who are willing. We are not holding a gun to anybody's head demanding their participation.

If you feel offended by what we are doing, there is little I can do. I personally hold people like you with a lot of contempt.

I might not engage you in this kind of discussion any further. I am very alive to some truths; we have few people like you who would rather we failed. But we have very many patriotic people, not necessarily Kenya, who are really motivated by the small things that we do.

I will go with the many who feel some positiveness in what we do. And I will refuse to be derailed by the people like you who have nothing to offer in the process. Yours are a kin to soar grapes.

Honestly, how could the UN come up with a world environment day if we could have such myopic and condescending attitudes?

Peace to you brother/sister or whatever you are.

Odhiambo T Oketch

I did not say it is new and created/manufactured in Nairobi, in fact I said it was raising its head in Toronto right here and we fought it. But it is the second sentence that gets to me, you state "We know where we are coming from, we know our role in making the city dirty as well, and as we demand for service delivery from the Council, some of us have chosen to partner with them in reclaiming the lost glory despite us being tax payers." End quote.

Oh really so now you are partners in making the city dirty. Oketch what else are you partners in Kenya council? We pile up shit in sewage systems are we  also going to fix them? The power supply is not running at par for we use it are we going to fix it too? Where do you start from in counting that responsibility and where do you cut it off? And the answer is very simple, you don't care and you do not regard your tax payers with respect, a very reason you only limited them on collecting garbage and sweeping city streets. It tells the entire story on how you take your city cleaners to be. Like I stated in my very first comment on the issue, this is a clear manifestations of poor leadership gimmicks, and what you need is some un trained Nairobi resident getting hurt while doing a city job and you get sued for damages.

Oketch get up and do the job the tax payer pays you for or turn around and help them to pay it to.

Edward,

Clean ups of cities by citizen is not new only to Nairobi. Many towns have gone that root and the people have appreciated.

We know where we are coming from, we know our role in making the city dirty as well, and as we demand for service delivery from the Council, some of us have chosen to partner with them in reclaiming the lost glory despite us being tax payers.

I would rather I be a responsible tax payer than grip on sour grapes.

And mark you, I chair a team that has been evaluating their performance.

Nairobi people

What does the taxes you pay do? You know I really get pissed off with these clearly manifestations of poor leadership gimmicks when politicians come to the people and put their burden on our shoulders, if you want the population to do what you the politicians are given money to do stop collecting the taxes and the people will clean up their city. And what really gets to me is to high lighten it as a responsible thing for the citizenries to do. They had started it too here in Toronto and we refused it. It is a sham and dictatorial. Tell me what my taxes do then I will replace it. Or come with the money you have saved for I did what it was supposed to do so now you have it in the city saving account, you simply cannot collect the taxes and I do what it is supposed to do. And what is next? Citizens carrying patients on their backs instead of driving them in ambulances?

Geez people wake up !!!!

[Attachment(s) from odhiambo okecth included below]

The launch of Clean up Nairobi was a big success yesterday at 1st Avenue Eastleigh.

The occasion was graced by His Worship the Mayor of Nairobi and he urged all residents to join hands with the City Council of Nairobi in addressing the environmental menace choking Nairobi in the form of garbage disposed of anyhow.

The launch was also addressed by Odhiambo T Oketch- Chair to CCNSET, Mr. Hassan Gullet- Chairman Eastleigh Business District Association, Eng Christine Ogut- Director of Environment at the City Council of Nairobi, Cllr Charles Atula- Chairman Environment Department at the City Council of Nairobi, area Cllr Robo and the area Chief Christine Dimba.

This was the beginning of our wish to reclaim the glory of Nairobi and this has been well captured in the maxim that we have settled for; Reclaiming the Green City in the Sun.

On behalf of CCNSET, I want to thank the general public who came out all across Nairobi to make this day a success. I also want to extend our appreciation to the following institutions for the support they gave to us to make this day a success;

  • Eastleigh Business District Association
  • Linora Construction
  • Magnate Ventures Ltd
  • Soliton Telmec Ltd
  • Day to Day Care Ltd

We want to thank His Worship the Mayor for gracing the launch and planting a commemorative tree for the launch at Pumwani Hospital. We also want to thank the Deputy Town Clerk Mr Omar Abdi, City Treasuer Mr Ngugi, Procurement Director Mr. Kohogo, MOH Dr Ayisi, PRO Mr. Marube for joing Eng Ogut in solidarity for this occasion.

It was a show of unity from the Council and we would like to see all Directors shaking Nairobi in the next such cleaning next month.

I must thank my collegues at CCNSET who made time for this great launch; Ms Petronila Nafula, Mr. Steve Waweru, Pst Benerd Mutuku and Mr. John Kihiu. You proved that we can make a team and help move the Council to the next level. I would also want to make special mention of my colleague from the Association of Citizens against Corruption Mr. Mark Korir; thanks for your presence and support.

Thanks to all those who responded to our call by taking part, by supporting us and even just by remaing with us in solidarity at the comfort of your homes.

Let us join the Council in reclaiming the lost glory of Nairobi as we demand for service delivery from them.

Peace and blessings to us all.
