What some folks find hard to accept is that many people, navigate
through life with an inquisitive and logical approach. Their beliefs
are based upon reasonable evidence and they discard as meaningless any
propositions that are unsupported with sound evidence or logic. An
atheist would only accept God's existence if compelling evidence were
provided.
As we stand today the "God hypothesis" is not yet proven by the
scientific method of enquiry or by logical construction. It is not
proven and therefore is an immaterial consideration for many people.
No amount of unsupported assertions and claims from experience will
change this. The religious people need to realise that they did not
arrive at their faith and religious convictions by science or logic
and hence are unlikely to prove the existence of God by science or
logic. If you are religious and are shaking your head as you read this
- I invite you to set up an experiment simillar to the one Elijah did
on Mt Carmel. This should convince most Atheists. If you can't or
won't it should be the explanation you need as to why Atheists hold
the positions they do.
That being the case Atheism is simply the expression of the position
that "God" is not yet proven to exist and therefore one choses not to
base his life on an unproven hypothesis. This world-view is logically
sound and valid and it exists among us whether African or not.
Tolerance as taught in most good books should ensure that the
religious folks and atheists accept and respect each others position
without resorting to insults or denial of the right to hold the
preferred world view.
