Re: VACANCY- SALES AGENTS

Maurice,
The Ontario case is similar to what goes on my neck of the woods. It is illegal to ask a prospective employer his or her age, marital status and gender among other nonsense. If one finds out that such parameters were employed, a very good civil case arises and so a very good chance for getting good money (the same reason I walk in supermarkets looking for slippery places in order to fall and get paid some handsome money or the carelessness i exhibit when I walk close to a stupid dog of a rich man, playing that it bites me. Fellows here are more litigious than Omtatah). I have seen some fellows demand that the person to be employed must be good looking. What garbage is this? What are they going to do with all the ugly people and they are the majority? The uglies need to stand up and fight for their rights instead of waiting for the good looking people to stop being mean to them. If they wait for us to help them, they will die unemployed and unappreciated. They must learn to advocate for themselves because we have more important things to do other than fighting for the ugly people.

On the academic, I am also in agreement with you. Only certain fields requires certain academic backgrounds. I have seen fellows with a background in chemistry easily go to a good graduate program in Social work or see a english major teach maths because they believe they have the skills and can pass teaching certification courses in that area. Some lawyers became very good maths teachers and are prepared for that fields teachings. I also see fellows switch careers with ease because the society here looks for skills other than what is in the transcripts.

So you ask very good questions. No one does not need such background to do well in such fields. Only last week a lady from home was asking me if I know of anybody with a degree (any) wishing to get a job in her firm in the area of auditing and other accounting stuff. One only needs to have a degree, any but capable of being trained or doing some accounting. She tells me of some english and history majors working with her company who have excelled in accounting.

Why is the Kenyan employer so rigid on academic credentials specific to the job? Quite honestly, I don't think one specifically needs a Sales and Marketing degree to be a sales agent. One only needs a bubbly and outgoing personality plus knowledge of the product.

For that matter, one does not need a political science degree to be an MP or an International Relations degree to be Ambassador.

I also find it strange that the Code of Human Rights does not bar an employer from specifying age requirements for a job. This is totally counter to even UN Charter of Human Rights.

It also amazes me when an employer specifies gender for a position. No wonder some employer recently asked for a Gujarati speaker for an accounting job in Kenya!!!!

In Ontario, Canada we've even abolished the mandatory retirement age (used to be 65). Now one can work for as long as one is still productive if one wants.

Take heart though; Kenya is not as bad as Taiwan on this issue. Taiwanese employers even as prospective candidates to forward a recent (less than 6 months) photo along with the CV.

Amazing!!!
