Re: Diabetes

Thanks Albert,
We should not always give up and lose hope over such calamities and look for ways of overcoming. Diabetes is devastating but fortunately can be overcome through lifestyle and medication.

Jonah,
Change of lifestyle. The food and inactivity. They say black people have a higher chance than other races. The spanish folks face the same issue. I think the food is to blame and the fact that people are not exercising as they used to (walking for example). Diet is a major issue. That is why sometimes back we used to call it a richman disease because we assume only rich people get the ugonjwa wa sukari as we also call it. What people didnt know is that poor folks escaped it because they didnt eat as much sugary/carbs as rich folks and when they did, they walked and worked in farms and their kids played all day. So they had the same potential to get diabetes but they escaped it due to diet and exercise.

It is mostly a genetic issue since those with it are likely to pass it to their folks but blacks have a higher chance. Losing weight help but diet and exercises works and so dont be surprised to see a mkonda (thin) folks with it.

This is what the destroyer of the human being (Kathukya Mundu) ought to do. Get into exercise and diet regiment and most important meet with his primary doctor regularly. If he cant exercise because he is lazy, he needs to do medicine right away. Untreated diabetes can kills or reduce one to a bedridden folk (can lose eye sight, limbs and has a higher chance of heart attack and other problems). Good thing is that diabetic can be controlled even with diet and exercise alone.

Simple exercise can do wonders. Avoid rides and walk as much as possible. If you drive, park as far as possible from the office and dont use lifts/elevators. Walk everytime you get a chance although hitting the gym is the best option. Avoid carbs (ugali, sukari na kadhalika) and when you eat them, use small portions. Medication exist which can keep you sugar within normal range. Avoid those sodas and sugar as advised in other mail but some forget that ugali and rice, our stapple food is full of sugar so avoiding ordinary sugar is useless unless you take note of other carbs. Eat small portions because too much ugali leads to some getting stored as useless stuff. The move now is to consume small portions of the carbs but if you can avoid them the better. They make you fat and that makes your diabetes worse.

Dont get scared of doing those medicines and having blood drawn every six months to check how you are doing. That is a better way of checking your blood control instead of relying on the metre only.

Keep your cholestrals within the normal range and have somebody check your feet, eyes and blood pressure once in a while.

Thanks Ndugu for wanting to educate people about this.

Even primary and kindergaten kids are being diagnosed with this disease. What could be the problem?

Hi everyone,

I am 29 yrs old and just been diagnosed with diabetes. It was an eye openner for me since I had always assumed this was a disease for old people. It is amazing how we take some things for granted and the many people out there who lack this information.

I feel obligated now to sensitize people about this. If there is anyone with contacts to an organization I could partner with in this, kindly share with me.

Be blessed,

Mutongoi
