I agree with you that there is a strong possibility that certain jobs are usually tailor-made for certain individuals.
Also, certain jobs such as UN-related ones are not as complicated as the academic requirements would suggest. For example, why would someone supervising the distribution of food and blanckets at a refugee camp need an MA? Can't this job be done by a bright Form 4 leaver?
The Gujarati speaker one really threw me for a loop though. Only in Kenya can such a thing happen.

Hebu ask them! First and foremost I think this was coined in cases where jobs are being tailor-made for certain people. Personally I think Kenyan HR people are the most ignorant (eeh, people dont chew my head off), this is why, certain things they are taught in school they never implement them when they finally get the jobs. So you get 'unqualified' people setting perimeters of who to employ in certain positions! I think this is wrong and I totally agree with you!
I have also seen cases where organizations ask for interns with a minimum qualification set as an MA!! UNICEF is very notorious with this, this leaves wondering kwani how complex are these tasks..........................But again I think this only happens in Kenya!

Why is the Kenyan employer so rigid on academic credentials specific to the job? Quite honestly, I don't think one specifically needs a Sales and Marketing degree to be a sales agent. One only needs a bubbly and outgoing personality plus knowledge of the product.
For that matter, one does not need a political science degree to be an MP or an International Relations degree to be Ambassador.
I also find it strange that the Code of Human Rights does not bar an employer from specifying age requirements for a job. This is totally counter to even UN Charter of Human Rights.
It also amazes me when an employer specifies gender for a position. No wonder some employer recently asked for a Gujarati speaker for an accounting job in Kenya!!!!
In Ontario, Canada we've even abolished the mandatory retirement age (used to be 65). Now one can work for as long as one is still productive if one wants.
Take heart though; Kenya is not as bad as Taiwan on this issue. Taiwanese employers even as prospective candidates to forward a recent (less than 6 months) photo along with the CV.
