E.Murugi's unconstitutional Remark on Gays/Lesbians

Dear friends,

Deny the existence of something,it finds ways of brooding itself, metamorphoses to stages that it springs its tentacles everywhere.

I do not know how many made it to the World Social Forum that was held at Kasarani about 3 years ago.
Among the many forums that showcased their agenda were Gays/Lesbians.My group paid them a visit among others and the following were my observations.

a) Beautiful girls and real handsome men made from our Nairobi university among other institutions and society were members.
b) Succinctly their message was one, recognize our sex orientation by making necessary laws as in other jurisdictions.

Sometime back,i plucked a passage from Pambazuka News Network in which i am a subscriber. The passage was about Gays/lesbians in Ghana.I posted it online and received heavy condemnation.

There is physical abuse to these group in Malawi among other countries. We have the same in Uganda.

In our matatus, public toilets, you will find numbers asking for a gay/lesbian to call that number.

I wish to make the following observations;-

a) Christians who condemn should seize the opportunity to teach lessons on family life and sexuality in general.
b)The general members of the society who do not like the orientation should look after their children, and friends so check on unfamiliar traits to avoid complaints and condemnation.
c) We need to open up to realities ( We denied HIV/Aids and condemned the infected as it became a stigma until recently when it was declared a national disaster). We all debated here about abortion with denials etc but the fact is its going on.You go to Koinange, those girls are merely supplying to the demand in market - continue denying ( your daughter/sister/aunt/ etc) will make it there, there is no hiding.

Now,Esther Murugi the Minister is only acknowledging the existence of the group. Assuming she denies, will they become extinct like dinosaurs that existed more that six million years !

Does acknowledging mean supporting and or even practicing the same!
What does Change mean in social circles as far as sexuality is concerned!

the gays shud be acknowledged and left alone, who are we to judge in the light while we do worse in the dark?? we are told everybody will be judged individually when that time comes, so gay or not gay, i dont give a hoot!!

I don't understand what problem it is if people choose to be gay! How does it affect the rest? And while gay marriages may not be allowed it doesn't mean gay people have no rights to association. Murugis remarks are true. Gays too are humans and ought to be left alone. Even animals have rights in these modern days. Don't forget a century ago there were people who thought Africans (blacks) were inferior and could not have equal rights like the whites! Others think Luos should not be president merely because they are not circumcised! Its this type of intolerant thinking that we ought to avoid. If someone chooses to be gay so be it, its their lives. Who are we to judge them? Next you will say all short men should be shot, then all Arsenal fans be exterminated etc! Its a free life. If one wants to worship a stone let him be. If one wants to be gay, let him/she be! God will be the judge.

'We need to learn to live with men who have sex with other men..we are in the
21st century and things have changed'. That was the statement by Minister Esther
Murugu - Special Programmes to a seminar for homesexuals, lesbians and sex
workers.

The current constitution outlaws gays/Lesbina marriages and as well it has
(not?) legalised prostitution. But the new bill of rights contains clauses
outlawing discrimination on nay grounds, including race and gender. Conservative
Kenyans complianed that the contentious clause would pave the way for gay
marriage.

Achbishop Desmond Tutu attacked the African clergy for clsoing doors for Gays
and Lesbians. In particular, Tutu asked the Kenyan clergy to allow Gay/Lesbian
to access to facilities like health, counselling and more so provide love.
Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex (LGBIT) together with the KNHRC
organized the first publc gathering of the Gays and Lesbians applauding the CoE
for inclusion of their rights in the constitution.

Should President Kibaki and Raila Odinga then take action against Esther Murugi
as per the Sheikh Mohmaed Khalifa of the Council of Imams and Preachers of
Kenya?
