Dear Cyprian and colleagues, I have also learnt of the shocking news of Beatrice Robi Mwita's sudden death today. I have been out of the country since DSeptember 29, 2010 and just returned only to get frantic telephone enquiries from friends and colleagues asking about the sudden demise of our sister Beatrice. From the telephone enquiries I have made to her relatives and close friends, I am informed that Beatrice collapsed suddenly at her Kugisingisi home in Kuria District, 12 km from Migori Town, on Tuesday morning and died on the way to hospital. The body is at Akidiva Memorial Hospital in Migori Town and funeral arrangements are on. I will keep you posted on situation. I spoke to Beatrice last week and she was very bothered about the premature declarations by politicians in Kuria and Migori County about which positions they wanted to take even before the constitution was fully implemented. Beatrice has been in the reform movement, joining at the height of the process by NCEC to penetrate Nyanza during the Kanu/NDP cooperation. She was among the delegates to the Nyanza NCEC forum who were whipped and scattered by goons out of Kisumu town but who nevertheless went ahead to rally the pro-reform forces in the province and was thereafter elected to the NCEC Management Committee. She has been an active pro-democracy and constitution advocate and unsuccessfully contested the Kuria parliamentary seat on Ford People ticket in 2002. She has remained active and visible within the women's and democratic movement and played a pivotal role in the last minute rallying of the Kuria community to vote for the constitution shortly before the referendum. She has also been active within the Nyanza Peace Committee were she has been a member for some time now. Hers was a voice of reason and change in a comunity where women have not had much space in leadership and was an indefatigable campaigner for child rights under a Cmmunity Based Organization she founded- Kuria Girl Child CBO. It is sad that Beatrice should pass on just when the fruits of her struggle was begining to emerge through the new constitution which should have seen her play key role in her community, Migori County and the nation as a whole. Her contribution will be missed. Oloo Janak --- On Wed, 10/6/10, orina Nyamwamu <orinaonka@yahoo.com> wrote:
