Re: What is in a name

Papa Likondi,
To me the name does not really make a team to win or lose. When we look at the local clubs, we may say that a name could play a role. I say this because most of our local teams can not sustain themselves without the backing of the public. That is why teams like AFC leopards, Gor, Shabana and Coast Stars needed names that link them to a particular catchment area where they would draw support. This is also the practice in the UK premier league. People in the UK and now the world Identify with clubs because of their names and because of the composition of players.
In Italy now almost all Kenyans are fans of Mariga's team.

As for Harambee stars, change of name is not important. The way players are recruited is the genesis of this problem. If you can remember well, there is a time when plyers for the national team were drawn from the major league clubs; AFC, Gor, Breweries, Re-Union, and then Shabana. The days of Masiga, Murila, Abas Magongo, Mohamed Abas, Tobias Ochola etc. These times the national team was powerful. There was fairness in team selection.

Whe Gerry SAURA took over, he went around the country and got players from all teams in the republic. That is the time when people like Anyangu, who then played for Mwangaza FC in Eldoret, Partrick Nachok,Wambani, Eliakim Amalemba, Sunguti George and others went to senagal for Africa Cup of Nations.

Now, it is matter of who knows who? Playing for the stars is exposure and what the team is concerned with is not actually winning but having an opportunity to play an international game and traveling. If our players had an opportunity to go and play let's say in the USA for friendlies, believe you me, some of them would not want to come back to Kenya. They would remain there to wash dishes.

Thanks

Liyai
If we renamed the team Kibaki Hotstars don't you think the boys will play with a lot of gusto going by the respect they have for our President?

Harambee does not mean what you are saying here. It means pull tohether and it is a bantu word from the miji kenda Halumbee no Hare Ambe as you are saying.

Olala,

The term Harambee is for sure a hindu word.
It was first used in kenya by the indian railway constructors.
HARE is praise, while AMBEI is an hindu god/goddes.
Other examples may include HAREKRISHNA, SHRISAIBABA etc etc
If you remember during the railway construction, heavy steel metals were used, and therefore
the indian constructors would call upon their god to give them the necessary strength to pull the heavy metals.
This  HARE AMBEI clarion call and the pulling together misled africans into believing that HARE AMBEI (HARAMBEE) means pulling together. Including the founding president mzee Kenyatta.
This led the mis inerpreted term to find its way into every sector in our republic including HARAMBEE AVENUE, OUR COURT OF ARMS, PARLIAMENT, NATIONAL SOCCER TEAM and even churches. Its vertually everywhere.
I dont want to be superstitious, but the fact remains that HARE AMBEI is praise/worship to a foreign god.
Over to you.

Kingasste.

I do believe that there is power in a name;as has been highlighted here before.
As a Christian the Good Book tells me that Abraham our father of faith had his name changed from Abram to Abraham and Sarai to Sarah before they received the promised blessings. The same is true to the great apostle Paul from Saul so as to be used by God.
Whatever happened to the former KFF to the now KFL is anyone's guess. The same baptism, could go well with our National footbal team and Kenya as a whole when the phrase "Harambee" is deleted from the public and replaced with a more meaningful word.
For those of you who know history than myself; will agree with me that aram bee refers to some Hindu god.Kenya is a God (not god) fearing country;who alone is the source of all strength and victory.I know that my take will draw mixed reactions, all the same,I promise to respect all of your views whether you will agree with me or strongly differ.Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and as for me;there's nothing more than a higher calling!
