Folks G*******t,
As you all know, by now, am always interested in simple questions like this. Must we close our eyes while praying? This question looks so simple but it has a very deep liturgical, theological, and practical implication. Like most evangelical/pentecostal family, i was told and taught at home that if you pray you have to close your eyes. All prayers (on dining table, in church service, family gathering, personal prayer, etc.) were done with eyes closed. I remember one of the church leaders, many many years ago, got very angry at me when he saw me praying with eyes open.
But this raises a question: can the closing of eyes be another proof that in fact we are blindly following ceremonial rituals that have no particular implication? Personally when i was young, it closed my eyes because it was the right thing to do. I was afraid some light would hit me from the skies if i opened my eyes.
But as i later came to learn, it was part of the whole religious slavery thing. I want to submit that this is proof enough that we really do not understand what we have gotten ourselves into. We are slaves of religion.
Regards
