Re: BUYER BE AWARE- MONROE SHOCK ABSORBERS WARRANTY CLAIM MAY NOT BE HONOURED

Dear Mr John

I'm sorry for the predicament you had to incur as you travelled to the countryside. The next time you want good shock absorbers go for Robs Magic shock absorbers. They are fully warranted ie 30,000 Kms and are designed for Off road driving.

I fitted my car with these shock absorbers and trust me they are an year and a half old and still in very good condition. Never had issues with them. Mostly I do off road driving especially when avoiding Nairobi Traffic Jam.

Regards

Konyi

Subject: BUYER BE AWARE- MONROE SHOCK ABSORBERS WARRANTY CLAIM MAY NOT BE HONOURED

Dear All

On 10th July 2010, I bought four new Monroe shock absorbers for my car at Kshs 26,000 from Hasnain Auto Spares Industrial Area (front and rear shock abosrbers). They were fitted on the same day by my mechanic of many days.

To my surprise, when I was coming from home in Kisii on 21st July 2010, the two rear shock absorbers collapsed. I realized this when the tyres touched the body and produced some funny sound especially when negotiating a corner. I also realized the rear right tyre was scratched because it was touching the car body. It forced me to stop at a petrol station in Kericho and ask for mechanic to help me out. On examination, he realized the problem was with the shock absorbers, which had collapsed. According to the mechanic, the coil springs were ok. I was surprised becuase the shock absorbers were not even two weeks old. I had not even covered 1000 km since they were fitted.

The mechanic advised me to fill them with gas or I have them replaced as it could be dangerous to drive with them in that condition. I told him to fill them with gas. After they were filled with gas, the funny sound dissapeared and I drove smoothly to Nairobi. On reaching Nairobi, I went straight to the shop from where I had bought the shocks to launch a complain. The Indian owner told me to deal with the Oriel Limited (who are the Monroe official distributor).

To cut the long story short, I went to Oriel Limited (near Subaru Kenya on Mombasa Road) but they rejected on the following grounds:

(i) I had filled the shocks with gas thus compromising warranty claim. Could I have driven from Kericho with deffective shocks? I could have caused more damage even lose the tyres. They say that I should have called them first for advise first.

(ii) My car's coil springs were weak. This is not true. The coil springs are in perfect shape as per the advise my mechanics. Oriel Limited do not want to agree that their shock absorbers were faulty.

This is for information to all who own cars. Be careful as some of the shock absorbers could be fake.
