Hello
I think one would adjust the lower limit of your addition to zero...anyway I like your piece in the sense that you bring up something that I have been struggling with; namely are we as a people mature enough to appreciate the "gains" that can accrued from the proposed constitution ? In many ways the contents of the proposed constitution borrows from the developed world (I am not talking about abortion, homosexuality and the like that is being trumpeting) but more on governance and bill of rights. From the way things happen in these countries there is a strong sense of patriotism, respect for citizenry and high sense of responsibility towards what I'd call mali ya ummah; the question is are we there ? If we are, then I believe your concerned as far as your queries on whether the proposed constitution
Will stop corruption?
Will stop tribalism?
Will improve living standards of Kenyans?
Will certainly be realized, I mean the point is one is corrupt yeah for selfish reasons but it is also a sign of lack of respect for rights of fellow citizens and public resources " I prefer to call this shared resources"; the same applies for tribalism. As far as improving the living standards I believe that is the responsibility of "responsible Kenyans" was it not JFK who said "ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country." In fact, it is the lack of maturity on the part of citizenry and leadership that ails the so called current constitution. I am taking the perspective that the proposed constitution is out to help bring sanity through legislative means...which may on its own not be effective if we're still not mentally ready for it. Lastly I made some calculation that after three multiparty elections we'd have learnt the folly of tribalism (at least in elections) I have wrong !! As a matter of fact the last multiparty election was ablaze. What say man...hoping for the best.

Subject: My Discontents on Proposed Constitution
From: amenya.gibson@gmail.com

I have been struggling with my mind about this thing we call "Constitution" on what is good and bad in current constitution and then what will be good and bad in proposed constitution?.
This is likely to remain a puzzle just like when I had confined my wisdom that 1plus 1 is two but only to later in my higher studies I have humbled myself to notice that 1+1 can be any value from 2 to 4 to anything based on which angle you may be looking from.
The excitement that new constitution when passed will herald Kenya to be among fast developing countries still to me will remain mystery as I search a viable solution
When we voted out Kanu and replaced it with NARC which we assumed will deliver us to promised democracy land but we all saw what happened.
NARC promised us a new constitution in 100 days nothing happened
It is during NARC regime that we witnessed highest election violence ever to have been witnessed in Kenyan history.
Will new constitution stop corruption?
Will new constitution stop tribalism?
Will new constitution improve living standards of Kenyans?
