Re: USA ambassador join the Yes campaign in Kitale

Dear All

Guys only those who do not know what they want in the new constitution can be discouraged by the US ambassador's support for the constitution. Probably we have forgotten the role Hempstone played in the 1990s for the same course. These are simply excuses! Good governance and Good Constitutions cannot be judged otherwise by global standards. They cannot be hidden under the cloak of national sovereignty!

Cheers

Mbare,

I tend to agree  with you that this Constitution is ours and us alone should be the ones to vote for it. The US ambassador should as a matter of courtesy stop being over involved lest he kills the spirit of kenyans to vote for the draft.

I think it's really wrong for any foreign ambassador or country to show too much interest in the constitution of another country. Much as we would like to have a new constitution, it's dangerous for foreign governments to show this kind of direct involvement. In fact, in developed countries, this is enough ground to have the constitution rejected by the people. The underlying argument would be that the constitution was not meant for the ordinary Kenyan who have been in the forefront for calls for a new dawn. We need a new constitution but people should not exploit our desperateness to give us a bad constitution - a constitution that is going to give too many rights that are repugnant with the African cultures or a constitution that borrows heavily from western constitutions and values. It's therefore important that people carefully read the document in order to understand the full import of the draft. Let's be rational and allow all shades of different opinions show that we can, as a nation, have a constitution that will stand the test of time!
