I dont know who came up with that nonsense. I know Orina even suggested that you become less "backward" and "tribal" if you visit the village. But that arguement is hollow because it presupposes, that if Sungu and Matunda didnt visit the villages, they would be tribalists. We cannot deny that some of those in the diapora are as tribalist as tribalism can get but suggesting that I have to spend time in Gaturi in order to get rid of tribalism is worst arguement I have seen coming from Orina's mouth. I am sure he didnt know what he was talking about but since he has done very well in the past and this is the only statement I have seen coming from his mouth, we forgive him. Sungu, Matunda and other are not tribalists and they are not so because they visit their Nyalgunga requently. If Matunda stayed in Canada for ever and Sungu decided to live for ever in Juba, they would not become tribalists or get worse.
On the contrary, I believe it is those who get out of their villages and live with folks from other places who are less tribalists. Forcing me to spend more time in Gaturi only help me build good relationships with my folks. In anycase those who are going to run for office in 2012 tend to spend more time in the villages for political reasons and they are doing the right thing. They move around and meet more people in their constituency. When Kuria Mwangi visits Gaturi, he only want to spend time with relatives and not with the Mungiki (not the gang but the multitude). I have no interests in meeting the Mungiki, whether the gang or the folks in Kiharu because I have no political ambition for now.

On the contrary, when one is away from home, we tend to appreciate and value our country more regardless of its flaws.For example during the PEV we met as KENYANS to contribute for victims regardless of regions...in fact,i wish those back home can move at our pace....tribalism can easily be malizwad. and when one meets a fellow Kenyan, I can bet you for most people " tribe" is the last thing on their mind. Majority of Kenyans that I know in Canada are very patriotic and are neither poisonous nor divisive. Most times we don't even know each other's tribes and we don't care.
You must try to be specific if you are characterizing the diaspora.

I do not believe all of them are tribal and backward but most are. The good once Like Matunda Nyanchama, Ochuodho, Otieno Sungu etc stand out so clearly. And one unique thing about them is that they come home regularly. They are more at their villages than those loud mouths in Nairobi who last went to their villages in 2007.
But seriously majority of Kenyan abroad need to swear the citizenship oath of allegiance to Kenya. They are so poisonous and divisive.
